Susan

Susan received her Doctor in Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry from The University of California, Berkeley. Prior to studies in California, she obtained her Master of Science (M.S.) in Chemistry from Yale University. While a graduate student, Susan was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. She attended The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) for her undergraduate studies where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in Biology, and conducted research in multiple labs across the country. Susan has given several talks on various subjects such as mentorship, careers in science, and her own research.

At TCNJ, Susan created the TCNJ Connect Program for chemistry students to share their research experiences at local high schools. Connect's mission is to inform high school students about exciting undergraduate opportunities in science. She was selected as a NJ Governor’s STEM Scholar, which mentors students through STEM-focused conferences and research experiences. For her contributions to TCNJ and the local community, Susan was recognized with a Blue and Gold Leadership Award.

Outside of her research at Yale, Susan participated in Advanced Teaching Workshops through The Center for Teaching and Learning, providing her with a strong foundation in teaching philosophy and practical educational tools. She also participated in a short business program hosted by the Yale Student Business Society which reviewed select topics that students in their first-year of an MBA cover. To share her excitement for science, she volunteered with Open Labs (a graduate student organization at Yale that puts on science demos and lectures for middle and high school students) to encourage these students to pursue scientific studies.

As a Ph.D. candidate at UC Berkeley, Susan was Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Focus Groups and participated in the College of Chemistry Graduate Diversity Program.

Susan’s strong background in science, writing, and outreach, combined with her enthusiasm for education prompted her to found Your Edvantage. Through her wide scope of experience, she understands what your next step requires, from making an excellent first impression to potential employers, to using a critical eye while reviewing applications, to providing confident answers throughout the interview process. She believes that everyone can succeed with the right preparation.

Ryan

Ryan received his Master’s degree in Chemistry from Yale University where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and the Residential College Science Tutor for Grace Hopper College. He currently works with a Fortune 500 and is the president of his corporation’s Toastmasters organization. Ryan attended California State University, Northridge (CSUN) where he was inducted into Sigma Xi Honors Society, graduated with a B.A. in Biology, and conducted research in an organometallic chemistry lab. Ryan has founded several companies, been featured in popular media, and given multiple talks about his science and life story.

While studying at CSUN, Ryan founded Argon Tutoring, focusing on elevating students’ understanding and application of the physical sciences from grade school through college. He taught organic chemistry courses for a Los Angeles-based MCAT and DAT preparatory company and organized free review workshops for university students. Ryan won several awards from the American Chemical Society for his outstanding public speaking and science communication excellence. Additionally, he was selected for the Cutler Scholarship for Outstanding Promise in Science in recognition of his undergraduate publication record and dedication to scientific education.

Outside of his research at Yale, Ryan participated in student mentorship programs through the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning and served on the Graduate Student Assembly as the representative for the largest graduate program on campus. He also became interested in the interface between science and business and alternative career pathways for non-traditional academics. After he completed his studies, Ryan worked with a Yale-based startup prior to transitioning into a corporate role.

Ryan’s passion for impactful communication and professional development in conjunction with his innovative technical background have been the main drivers for starting Your Edvantage. These accomplishments and experiences give him a unique and clear perspective on how to achieve high set goals and properly position students and young professionals alike for immediate and continued success.
